MAUREEN ENNS: For her groundbreaking experimental research concerning human coexistence with grizzly bears in Russia's Far East. Maureen is an internationally celebrated artist. Since 1986 she has focused her art on the conservation of wild/ misunderstood animals which has earned her numerous national and international awards. Her current focus is the wild horses of Alberta and their dwindling wilderness habitat north of Calgary: the subject of her second feature documentary. She has two post graduate degrees in art and twenty five years teaching experience at the Alberta College of Art and Design.

The Art Workshop:

From Realism to Abstraction: The Workshop will focus on the fund of drawing and painting in a wild environment. You can be a beginner or a professional. Assistance with color, composition, achieving depth realistically or abstractly will be given where needed. For professionals, the approach will be that of an "open studio"- self directed but with lots of conversation to encourage new direction in your work.

We will hike to locations overlooking some of the most spectacular vistas in the Canadian Rockies. You will be encouraged to work with a variety of media out of an art kit designed for your back pack. Emphasis will be on the trajectory of realism to abstraction working off the right side of your brain. Feel it- don't overthink it!

Grizzly Country: In September the grizzlies are busy in the alpine meadows digging Columbian goundsquirrels and fattening up on berries in preparation for hibernation. Mother grizzlies and cubs, as well as sub-adults with character are often sighted within walking distance from the Lodge. Maureen, co-author of "Grizzly Heart" and "Grizzly Seasons" will give an illustrated talk on living safely in bear country and how to deal with surprise encounters.

The Mount Assiniboine Lodge Public Tender Bid- January 2008 Update

The Past Two Years at Assiniboine

Copy of the Assiniboine Waiver

The Mount Assiniboine Lodge Public Tender Bid- January 2008 Update

This is our 25th year operating Mount Assiniboine Lodge. Our current contract with BC Parks to manage Mount Assiniboine Lodge, the Naiset huts, campgrounds and the Hind Hut now finishes in October 2009 as we are operating under a two year permit extension.

Our job was publically tendered in mid-January 2007. We submitted a proposal to BC Parks at that time. Our bid was the only one which the Ministry received. At the end of March the Ministry of Environment contacted us to say that they had cancelled the Request for Proposals process and would enter into direct negotiations with us.

We have met twice with BC Parks staff in Cranbrook, BC since last spring. There are major issues to overcome in these discussions, including securing an economically viable deal for our small company and guarantees of tenure security.

At this juncture we have withdrawn from negotiations. We anticipate that our job will be publically tendered again, most likely this year or early in 2009. We may or may not bid on the next contract.

This has been a difficult decision for us to make. As all of you know- we have put our heart and souls into Assiniboine over the past twenty five years. Our children were interested in operating the lodge in the future but are now looking for other opportunities.

Thank you for your interest, your phone calls and many letters of support.

The Past Two Years at Assiniboine

2006 was a busy year. In February we were in Torino, Italy for the Winter Olympics. Our daughter Sara and her husband Thomas Grandi were both racing at the Olympics, Sara racing in cross country ski events and Thomas competing in alpine technical events. In the Team Sprint Cross Country Ski Event Sara and Beckie Scott won a silver medal for Canada!

On February 1, 2007 Sara and her husband Thomas had a baby girl called Aria. Thomas has retired from World Cup ski racing and is now managing Alpine Alberta, an association for young alpine ski racers. Sara is racing again with the Canadian National Cross Country Ski Team and will compete in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Assiniboine Lodge will continue to host ski training camps for the cross country ski team in May of this year.

During the summer of 2006 Andre and Sara Renner managed Assiniboine Lodge with help from their sister Natalie and energetic Lodge staff.

Andre and Natalie are now Winter Assistant Ski Guides and members of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Natalie is a full Paramedic and hopes to become a fully accredited ACMG Winter Guide.

Andre Renner will manage the lodge for the next two years. Sepp and I come in as relief managers and will both be spending a lot of time at our favorite place! We are looking forward to seeing everyone again for our 25th year at Assiniboine.

All the best to you! We hope to see you this summer! There are still some spaces available in June, high season July, August, September and October.

Barb Renner
